Observation Narrative
Tagged tree is a Carya ovalis of 25cm dbh with tag# 395. Conduit is at a bearing of 220 degrees and 1.5m from tree.
Directions to tag tree: Plot is hard to find without GPS unit! Park at end of Toms Road (obtain permission from Mr. Stanley down the road; we walked to Mrs. Barton's home last time). Head up old logged road for about 250m, then turn off of road and head up slope. Side ridge is at a bearing of 340 degrees. Stay on this [ ] to plot 34, at best 34, reset bearing to 330 degrees and head up that bearing for 350m to very rocky, concave slope.
Plot location was pre-selected by the project's stratified random sampling design.
Time taken to walk to plot: 20 minutes from plot 34, 1:20 from Tom's Road.
Hydrology: South facing, but protected so not terribly dry. Species are very rich. High herbaceous cover as well.
Landscape And Landuse History: Fairly old forest with some trees exceeding 60cm dbh. Area has been subject to past grazing pressure. Logging also possible Some canopy gaps, then tree death---rocky, open canopy forest.
